The history of actor/writer John Cariani’s 2004 play, Almost, Maine, is interesting, to say the least. Despite a locally successful premiere with the Portland Stage Company, the romantic comedy wasn’t a big hit in New York, where it played at the Daryl Roth Theatre off-Broadway.
If nothing else, the human condition is an incredibly generous entity, serving up endless degrees of humor at the drop of a hat. North Coast Repertory Theatre’s excellent ‘All in the Timing,’ in which David Ives chronicles this rather wry observation, is an ideal example.
Continuing its star-studded array of performers at The Conrad, the La Jolla Music Society presented Daniil Trifonov–the most astounding pianist of our age– in recital Wednesday, April 17.
“Cinderella” was an inspired choice for Jared Nelson’s first evening-length work as artistic director of California Ballet. The ballet, which premiered last weekend, continues the company’s tradition of going with classics that have family appeal and can fill the Civic Theatre. And, like Cinderella shaking off the ashes and emerging as a princess, Nelson’s lively choreography and sense of fun promise to reinvigorate the 50-year-old company’s sometimes-musty repertory.
