It takes more than talking mice and princesses to make a tale. At the Globe, PigPen Theatre has tried to graft their folksy flavor into a children’s story about a heroic rodent named Despereaux but lost their way pretty soon. Confusion ensues.
“Matilda the Musical,” directed by Jamie Torcellini, has dynamic elements that we expect from Moonlight Stage Productions and a splendid cast that shines. Every scene screams with childlike imagination. In the tender song “Quiet,” Charity Rose as Matilda sings in a heartfelt whisper. Litvak Dance excels at storytelling, turning dances into intimate narratives. And Emily Miller is a gem, not only a powerful mover but a wonderfully mobile-faced actor whose pout could be a weapon. Those were my top takeaways from “Small Dances,” the program Litvak did at the Vine Theater last weekend.
